Juliusz Tomczak

Historian. Author. Translator.

Historian, writer, translator, and editor specializing in military and historical publications. A graduate of the Faculty of History at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, where he studied in the Department of Military History.

In 2014, he earned his PhD with distinction for his dissertation, “Infantry on the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War.”

Between 2009 and 2019, he translated, edited, and annotated numerous historical works originally published in English for Replika, Tetragon, and Napoleon V Publishing. He has participated in academic and student conferences, taught university courses, and continues to present the results of his research through lectures and public talks.

Since 2009, he has published in both academic and popular history journals in English, including Polish American Studies and Folia Archaeologica, as well as in Polish journals such as Colloquium and Przegląd Historyczno-Wojskowy (Historical and Military Review). His articles have also appeared in leading Polish military and maritime magazines, including Okręty Wojenne (Warships), Okręty (Ships), Poligon (Training Ground), and Morze, Statki i Okręty (Sea, Ships and Warships). Since 2022, he has been a regular contributor to Morze, Statki i Okręty (Sea, Ships and Warships).

His primary field of interest is the American Civil War, both on land and at sea. He is also interested in the evolution of infantry tactics throughout history, maritime history—with particular emphasis on the Age of Steam and Iron—ancient warfare, especially Classical Greece, the Hellenistic world, and the Roman Republic, as well as armed conflicts between 1815 and 1914.

That said, he firmly believes that no period of history and no historical event is ever truly uninteresting.
